Where did the Weston’s Diploma Parchment come from?
Weston’s Diploma Parchment is manufactured by the Byron-Weston Division of the Crane
Paper Company in Dalton, Massachusetts. It has existed as a stand-alone product
for 50+ years, specifically for the production of U.S. military honorable discharge
certificates, yet it went undetected as a medium for Platinum-Palladium photo printing
until June 2006.
John Marcy of Northampton Photographic Arts and John Zokowski of the Butler-Dearden
Paper Company met in late 2005, at which time John Marcy engaged John Zokowski to
attempt to identify a new paper for the Platinum-Palladium process. Little did either
of the two Johns know that the combining of their expertise was to be the ideal
catalyst for the culling of papers from the paper manufacturers of North America
and western Europe, resulting in the identification of Weston’s DP.
During the next several months John Marcy received samples of many papers for testing,
with several showing only some or limited promise as qualified candidates.
The Eureka moment came late one afternoon in June 2006 when John Marcy made the
serendipitous discovery of the Weston paper’s outstanding print results. Both of
us were elated to discover that the Weston’s Diploma Parchment produces a wonderful
range of tones and a terrific DMAX. Moreover, it clears very quickly and does not
soak up too much chemistry nor does it repel being coated.
It’s smooth finish combined with its warm eye-pleasing shade and easy clearing make
the Weston’s Diploma Parchment the ideal medium for either the professional, amateur
or student PT/PD practitioner.
We invite you to experience the ease with which you too can make a high quality
